China's puppet play enjoys a rather long history and there have been records of it in as early as the Han Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty, economic growth stimulated the development of art and culture. As a result, the artistic formats of puppet play became diversified; for example, it had evovled many forms, such as marionette, rod puppet, Yao-Fa puppet, flesh puppet and water puppet and so forth.
