Phratries are the local social groups in ancient Athens featured by blood relationship and specific locality, having a religious bond with genes, demes and phylai, and making the polis of Athens work in orders. For the Athenian society, in which Athenian politics and religion cannot be separated completely, phratry membership is undoubtedly necessary for the Athenian citizenship. Athenians themselves also prove their identity of citizens by participating into phratry festivals, sacrificial ceremonies and other religious activities.
