封建统治阶级为了维护自己的尊严，规定说话和写文章时遇有皇帝和尊亲的名字都不准直接说出或写出，不准用他们名字中的字，这叫做避讳。避讳也是修辞格的一种，对犯忌触讳的事物不直说，而用别的语句来表述。如不直说“死了”，而说“老了”、“不在了”。
