秦汉之际，月氏族游牧于河西走廊的敦煌、祁连间，势力一度强盛，匈奴单于头曼曾将其子送入月氏当质子。汉文帝初年，匈奴单于冒顿大举征伐月氏，杀月氏王，月氏战败，被迫西迁至伊犁河流域。其中有一部分遗留月氏人留居祁连山一带，与羌人杂居，始称小月氏。两汉至南北朝是小月氏人迁徙与民族变迁的重要时期。

英语语境:

Between the Qin and Han Dynasties, the Yuezhi (or Rouzhi) people were once a strong nomadic clan around Dunhuang and Qilian, and the Hun Chanyu, Touman, had to send his first son into Rouzhi as a hostage. In the early years of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, Hun Chanyu Modu carried out a large-scale invasion into Rouzhi and killed the king. Then Rouzhi was defeated and forced to move to the west of the Ili River. Some of them stayed in the Qilian Mountains, lived together with the Qiang people, and began to be called Xiao Rouzhi. From the Han Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties, it was an important period in the migration and transformation of the Xiao Rouzhi people.
