英语语境:
Family punishment was a form of collective punishment based on kinship, and it was mainly applicable to political crimes. Except for a small number of variances, the collective death penalty was meted out basically to “parents, wives and off-springs“ of the accused during the Qin and Han Dynasties. Starting approximately from the reign of Emperor Xuanyuan, the family punishment gradually changed from that of killing to banishment. The clan system provided the necessary conditions for collective punishment, which constituted an effective mechanism of small governments controlling a large state. It set up an upper limit of punishment while greatly enhancing the deterrent power of punishments.
