silver vault
Early business records, land contracts and inscriptions on tablets reveal that silver coins had been used for trade since Tai Wan was occupied by Dutch. However, after Taiwan was reoccupied by Zheng Chenggong silver coins were continued to be used by local people. During the reign of emperors Jiaqing and Daoguang, the import of opium had resulted in the silver vault flowing out of the economy and the only way for Tai Wan to maintain its currency was to mint silver coins by itself. So the silver cake coin inscribed with an old man was issued in the eighteenth year of Daoguang's Reign (1838). The coin's weight was reduced in 1842 and again in 1845. The Manchu words engraved on the head of the coin were “Fu Ku” (the provincial treasure) while the seal on the tail was “Cheng Ji”.
