燕下都半瓦当均为范具压制当面纹饰，范具呈圆形，由两个相同且对称的图案构成，两图案中间留有一条较窄的切割线。制作时，需将范具在当面泥坯上压制纹样，然后粘接于筒瓦坯的母口一端，再沿切割线由外向内切割，将其一分为二，最后烧制而成。所谓错切，就是误将切割线转动90度而切，从而产生了特殊纹样的半瓦当。

英语语境:

All the semicircular tile-ends unearthed from the site of Lower Capital of Yan State have a semicircular plan, which is shaped by dividing into halves of the body that were made in a circular mold with design. When making the semicircular tile-ends, patterns needed to be pressed on the surface of the earthen briquette with sample mould; and then attached it to the outer side of the cylindrical tiles; finally divided it into two parts by cutting along the cutting line from inside to the outside. The so-called mis-cutting happened in the process when some till-ends were mistakenly cut along the vertical diameter to the normal cutting line. This led to the formation of extraordinary designs, which draw attention for their rarity.
