Brush washer actually means washing brush. It is one article of the writing table except for the “scholar's four jewels” (writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper), which refers to the vessel filled with water to wash the brush. Though it's very easy to make, the ancient people spared no efforts to carve superb craftworks one after another. The textures of the brush washer are various, including porcelain, jade, agate, enamel, ivory and rhinoceros horn, etc., which are fabulous and valuable. Porcelain brush washers are the most commonly used among many other types. They derive from Tang and Song Dynasties and become very popular in Ming and Qing Dynasties; the number of their heritages is in large quantities and becomes the mainstream of the brush washers, which is the greatest delight to appreciate among the calligraphy materials. These porcelain brush washers are usually made with flared mouth and shallow belly and are made in various shapes, including flowers and fruits, fishes, and beasts, etc.
