墨床，亦称墨架、墨台，是专门用来盛搁墨锭的小案架。墨磨后湿润，乱放容易玷污其它物品，故制墨床以搁墨。墨床以墨定形，通常不会太大，宽不过二指，长不过三寸。其制作材质多种多样，有铜、玉、石、瓷、木、竹之别。造型多为案架形、座托形、书卷形、博古架形，深受历代文人墨客的青睐。墨床产生的具体年代，文献里鲜有记载。

The ink rest, also known as ink shelf or disk inking, is a small table shelf used specially to place ink stick. Being grinded, the ink stick gets wet and would smudge other things around it, so the ink rest is made to place the ink stick. The size of the ink rest is related to the ink stick and is not very large. Usually, the width is less than the length of two fingers and the length is no less than 1/3 decimetre. It can be made of various materials like copper, jade, stone, pottery, wood and bamboo. The shapes mainly include table shelves, saddles, scrolls or shelves for antiques which were popular among poets and literary men. However there's rare record about when the ink rest was first invented.
