Sansui County has long been known as the land of bamboo ware. In 2008 it was designated as “the folk art center of bamboo weaving in China”, and the craftsmanship of bamboo weaving has become an integral part of intangible cultural heritage of Guizhou province. Whenever there is a fair in the urban or rural areas, the market is overwhelmed by a smell of bamboo fragrance and is flooded with such bamboo wares as bamboo hats, bamboo crates, winnowing pans, bamboo sieves, baskets of thin bamboo strips, bamboo wares engraved with letters or decorated with flowers, etc. Don't underestimate these pure hand-made bamboo wares. In 1970s, the Wazhai bamboo hat was chosen as the gift presented to the former U.S. president Nixon. In 1984, the Wazhai bamboo hat was again presented to another U.S present Reagan who was paying a visit to China.
