layer of cloth
Approximately in the Spring and Autumn period, craftsmen in lacquerware industry tried to use clay for moulding, or wood mould for demoulding. They pasted lacquer on all kinds of cloth and unshelled them from the mould after drying up. After long-term practices and improvements, this new technique of making body samples or lacquer fetus finally matured in Han Dynasty, replaced other technologies, and became the most typical technique for making lacquer fetus. This is the world-famous “Jia Zhu” technique. “Jia” has two meanings: it firstly refers to the multiple layers of cloth, and secondly refers to the fillers between layers of cloth. Seen from the fragments of lacquerware of the Western Han Dynasty, the fillers between two layers of cloth are made by pouring the bone powder, tile ash, bits of wood and powdered carbon into raw lacquer. In this way, the wall of lacquerware can be firmed and protected from crinkling and shrinking to maintain a constant state for a long time. “Zhu” refers to all kinds of linen knitted fabrics, and here refers to the most widely used linen since the Han dynasty.
