玉人神器在新石器时代已经出现并取得了相当的成就，它们是了解当时各类人物的穿戴情形、服饰图案、头发结扎式样、礼仪活动及宗教信仰的极珍贵的实物资料。早在本世纪三十年代已有夏商时期玉人神器的闻见，但大量地发现，包括一批早年出土但出土时间和地点不详的传世品被确定为这一时期的器物则是最近几十年中的事。其中有些传世品已流到境外，而大多则留在中国各地博物馆和私人收藏者手中。

Jade figures emerged in Neolithic times and their production process had achieved marvelous achievement, which provided valuable materials to learn the clothing, dress patterns, hair styles, ceremonies, and religious fervor of all walks of life in that age. It was said that some jade figures of the Xia and Shang Dynasties had been found in the early 1930s, but plentiful jade figures, including articles handed down from ancient times that were unearthed in earlier times without excavation record, were just identified as antiques of Xia and Shang periods in recent years. A few of these jade figure wares were looted by western powers while most of them are kept in domestic museums and private collectors.
