The Chuihuazhu (festooned hanging pillar) is a highly-decorative structural element that is quite distinctive in Chinese traditional wood construction. In terms of its form characteristics, Chuihuazhu has made a transition from textiles to jewelry, wooden construction, stone carving and colour painting; as for its symbolic meaning, the Chuihuazhu in Buddhism and Confucianism are rich in symbolism. It was due to the symbolic meaning which Chuihuazhu had in the Buddhism that Chuihuazhu was then introduced into China and gradually transformed into steady wooden construction. Later, with the widespread adoption of this kind of building by local residents, Chuihuazhu became more popular and obtained new meanings in the Confucianism.
