In the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, one kind of realistic decoration quietly emerged with natural and realistic style and with decorating theme of describing social life. This kind of realistic style of the bronze ware originated from the late Spring and Autumn period, and enjoyed popularity in the early and middle stages of the Warring States period. As this realistic decoration derived from the subjects of the social life of the time, it had gone beyond the properties of general pattern and had the narrative characteristic, so it was called narrative pictorial design. The craft of the narrative pictorial designs on the bronzes of the Eastern Zhou period could be divided into three types: engraved designs, cast designs and inlaid geometrical interlacements. The engraved designs were mainly found in Wu, Chu and Three-Jin areas. The cast designs were popular in Three-Jin and the neighboring area. The inlaid geometrical interlacements were prevalent in Three-Jin and Yan-Dai area. The formation of the different regional styles of the narrative pictorial designs on the bronzes of the Eastern Zhou period was closely related with the mainstream of local ideas and the traditional craft.
