为了进一步查清87窟壁画所使用颜料的主要成分，考古学者对87窟主要使用颜料进行了现场XRF检测。由于东壁壁画起甲严重，保存状况很差，不合适作XRF检测。故本次检测主要在南北壁上进行，共选择59个点，所检测颜色包括绿色、蓝色、红色、黑色等。经检查，不同部位的同一种颜色成分几乎相同。壁画常用红色颜料为朱砂与铅丹。而从初唐到中唐，铅丹的应用逐渐增多，初唐时期铅丹的使用非常少，盛唐、中唐时期，铅丹的使用明显增多，而且较多地使用了铅丹和朱砂料。因此该监测点检测的87窟窟顶花饰使用的红色应为朱砂和铅丹的混合物。

Major pigments of No. 87 Cave are tested by field-monitoring of XRF for further investigating the main composition. Frescos in the eastern wall are seriously deteriorating and have a bad preserving environment, which is not suitable for XRF test. So, the test focuses on the frescos in the southern and northern part. Fifty-nine points are chosen in total, and the tested colors include green, blue, red, black, etc. The test results show that the same color in different points has almost the same composition. Zinnober and minium are used for the red pigment of frescos. However, the application of minium is increasingly growing from early to middle Tang Dynasty. In early Tang Dynasty, minium is seldom used, but in the prosperous and middle Tang Dynasty, it is obviously used more. Moreover, minium and zinnober are major materials. Therefore, the red pigment in the poppyhead of No. 87 Cave, tested by XRF in the monitoring site, is the mixture of zinnober and minium.
