Flying deva is not only a decorative art image in form of painting and sculpture in Buddhism art, but also the most characteristic decorative painting in Dunhuang murals. A great deal of flying deva's image from 4th century to 14th century is kept in Dunhuang grottoes . The image is fictive, but of special religious meaning as well as surpassing artistic value. The quantities of flying deva increased sharply in Sui and Tang Dynasties, which was a developing and blooming period of flying deva. In this period, flying deva's image was versatile, remarkable and distinctive. Since the discovery of Cangjing Cave (cave containing Buddhist sutra) in the 20th century, the image of flying deva has gone out of the Buddhist grottoes with the development of Dunhuang mural art, and has transformed from religious art to a secular one. At present, the image of flying deva is widely used in various fields of social life, and becomes a classic symbol of Chinese culture.
