中国古鉴自殷商以降，已有四五千年的历史。在漫长的岁月里，中国古代工艺家在小小一方铜镜上创造出了丰富多彩的图案。与其它传统工艺品不同，古鉴背面的图案多以日月星辰、图腾鸟兽和花草人物为主，结合各种铭文，逐渐形成了寓意深刻的特有样式。其中，借助“外圆内方”的镜式和众多图形表现时空观，更成为中国古鉴背面样式中常用的手法。

英语语境:

Chinese ancient bronze mirrors have had a history of four or five thousand years since Shang Dynasty. Through those long years, the Chinese ancient craftsmen have created various kinds of patterns on such small bronze mirrors. Different from other traditional hand crafts, the patterns engraved on the back of ancient bronze mirrors mainly focused on the sun, moon and stars, the bird or beast totems, flowers and personages as well as a variety of inscriptions, which gradually formed unique patterns that were pregnant with meaning. Among other things, the pattern of “round outside but square inside” and other graphs were commonly used as techniques to express the ancient Chinese people's view of time and space.
