挂屏，因像画轴或画框一般挂在墙上而得名，它是纯粹的装饰品，起美化厅堂的作用。1972 年吐鲁番张礼臣墓出土的一幅木框联屏《 绢画弈棋仕女图》，是迄今为止发现最早的挂屏实物。宋代以来，亦有用石、玉、竹等用料雕刻成的类似挂屏的装饰品。至明清期间，挂屏，已摒弃了屏风原有的实用功能，而成为集镶嵌、雕刻、刺绣和诗书画等多种艺术表现形式于一身的装饰陈设用艺术品。

Hanging screen, which is usually hung on the wall like picture shaft or picture frame, is a pure ornament used to beautify the living room. In 1972, a pair of wooden combined screen “the silk picture of ladies playing the game of go” was unearthed from the tomb of Zhang Lichen in Turpan. It is the oldest existing hanging screen unearthed so far. Since the Song dynasty, decorations similar to hanging screens have been made from stone, jade, bamboo and so on. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, hanging screens have lost the practical function and became the decorative work of art bearing inlay, carving, embroidery and poetry, calligraphy, painting and the like.
