20世纪30年代庄学本西康考察摄影图片保留了有关“西康女子”涂面习俗的极为珍贵的民俗资料。据藏汉文史资料记载，这种被称作“赭面”的习俗早在吐蕃时期业已存在，20世纪末期在青海都兰地区发现的吐蕃墓中的棺板画也能见到这类习俗。一部分当代藏学家认为赭面习俗更可能流行于“西康女子”及藏北牧区，与古代东氏族有密切关系。

Photos from Zhuan Xueben's field trip to Xi Kang in 1930s preserved valuable information on Xi Kang women's unique facial make-up custom. According to historical material and literature both in Tibetan and Chinese, this unique custom which was called “Zhe Mian” had been existing since Tubo kingdom period. In the 20th century, this unique custom of facial make-up also appeared on the coffin painting of Tubo tomb discovered in Qinghai Dulan area. Some contemporary Tibetan scholars believed that this custom of “Zhe Mian” was popular among Xi Kang women and in nomadic area of north Tibet which showed close relationship with ancient Dong Clan.
