In the past studies of the ancient navigation techniques, the terrestrial navigation and the astronomical navigation had been researched extensively, while few studies focused on the hydrological navigation. The hydrological navigation technology, originated from the unique regime of the oceanographic hydrology at the north of the Changjiang Estuary, namely the northern sea area, was an important component of ancient navigation techniques and made a great contribution to the civilization of world navigation. Through studies on hydrological seamanship, it is estimated that utilizing the regular change in the color of the ocean water had played an important role at the northern sea area in ancient China.
