Few vase-shaped He-pitchers with closed top in the pre-Qin period were found, and so far only over ten pieces of them have been discovered. But their distribution is very wide. They emerged in the late Longshan Age and had almost disappeared since the Shang Dynasty. In terms of their usage, they might have been used as pitchers, storing vessels or washing utensils, but more likely as ritual vessels. The diffusion and spreading of them reflected the converging and radiating modes of the formation of the early civilization in China. Their diffusion process was that of the territory extension of early states and their diffusion paths were also the important communication routes among the important cultural zones.
