Gunpowder is one of the four great inventions in our country. But before the North Song Dynasty, it was just used in medicine rather than in military. By the time of Northern Song Dynasty, with the flourishing of handcraft industry and the need of war, it was liberated from taoistic alchemy stove and was widely used in military, life and art, which had exerted positive effects on the development of human society. During the 300 years of the Song Dynasty, people put it into various uses of making fireball, powder-driving arrow, artillery and roer for war, which marked the beginning of a new era of the application of gunpowder to war. Then, its property and power had been fully displayed. The inventions and application of various gunpowder weapons had laid solid foundations for subsequent new weapons.
