The auspicious images depicting a God holding a fish were commonly seen on objects of the Han and Jin periods that have unearthed from a broad area in China. Attached with auspicious words of the propitious pattern, these images are believed to imply good wishes for career promotion. The depiction of images follows a fixed pattern. Features of the God enjoyed a great similarity to those of the pre-Qin period while presenting the characteristics of the times. Meanwhile, influenced by the concept of ascending to the immortal in Han Dynasty features of the God also exhibited characteristics of that time. The God-holding-a-fish depiction was often accompanied by patterns such as phoenix and birds, phoenix and birds with silk ribbons, or phoenix and birds with beads in mouth on different objects. These graphic elements together with the matching texts composed the auspicious images had expressed people's best wishes for higher official ranks in the Han and Jin dynasties.
