稷是一种从古代就普遍种植的农作物。但古人以为人人皆知而未过多明示描述，以至南北朝以来，稷到底是哪种农作物，一直争论不休。稷到底是黍 （北方黍子），还是粟（北方谷子），这个问题仍未解决。另一说为高粱，该说法基本已否定。《本草纲目》提出另一说，以为稷为黍类，不粘为黍，粘为稷。

Panicled millet is a kind of crop that has been widely planted since ancient times. However, the ancient people did not give it much description for they thought it was well known to all. Later since the Southern and Northern dynasties, it has been heatedly debated what species panicled millet grass is. The question whether panicled millet is broomcorn millet, which is called “shuzi” in the north, or Setaria italic grain, which is called “guzi” in the north, is still not answered. Some people said that panicled millet was a kind of sorghum, which was almost denied. It was stated in “Compendium of Materia Medica” that panicled millet was a kind of millet; the sticky one belongs to the species of millet, while the non-sticky one belongs to the species of panicled millet.
