Through analyzing the moat-surrounded settlement at Menbanwan and on the basis of a comprehensive study of Neolithic moat-surrounded settlements along the middle reach of the Yangtze River, archeologists assumed that the moat-surrounded settlement originated from ditch-surrounded settlement which was a necessary result of environmental changes and the evolution of settlement patterns. The main function of the moat was to protect the city from floods and resist the intrusion of external disaster victims. Actually these settlements constituted a type of central settlement in special geographical settings, which essentially differed from cities of the civilized period.
