calligraph

Dunhuang grottoes gather the essence of Chinese traditional painting art, and represent the wisdom of ancient people. However, in history, it was plagued by plunder and natural environment erosion until Zhang Daqian copied Dunhuang murals and showed the calligraphy artworks to the public. It was until then did people realize their preciousness. Although Zhang Daqian's two arrivals at Dunhuang grottoes was disputable when it came to the preservation of cultural relics, yet undoubtedly, whether Zhang Daqian damaged Dunhuang murals or not, his copying frescoes exerted a significant impact on Chinese paintings.

copy

The Buddha statues of Tang Dynasty in Mogao Grottoes played a very important role in the development of Chinese Art History. When they were exposed to the alien arts, they also enhanced the art to a new peak based on the one in Han Dynasty. The present nine color statues in cave 205 are regarded as the excellent representatives of early Tang Dynasty. Being famous for its graceful style and nice color, the damaged half-sit cross-legged Buddha in the center of the south side of altar is considered as the Venus of the East. Due to the historical reasons, it was damaged severely in the past, but the essence of the Buddha lingers on. In order to copy and restore the statue, the archaeologists were on a field trip in particular to Dunhuang grottoes and made a comparative study of the contemporary statues and frescos. And then the archaeologists copied the half-sit cross-legged Buddha in cave 205 objectively and restored the statues more vividly.
