Gu Sui was a famous contemporary literati and scholar, and he had also made great achievement in calligraphy. Gu Sui, significantly influenced by Shen Yinmo, was one of the members of the school in 1930s and 1940s who advocated returning to classical Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi's calligraphy. In terms of the learning method, Gu Sui emphasized not only practicing calligraphy after a model, but also the flexibility for creation. As to the form, Gu Sui regarded orderliness as the foundation, and variety the higher goals of calligraphy. As for the content, Gu Sui gave a high appraisal to calligraphy with strength, elegance, and antique.
