Under the Chinese historical and cultural background, Dunhuang occupied a special position in promoting Sino-western culture exchanges and the prosperity of Dunhuang mural art. Dunhuang frescoes in Tang were the centralized reflection of the essence of Dunhuang art: its language closely revolved around religious themes and described the popular belief of Tang Buddhism in a unique language style of that time; its figure paintings mostly and directly sketched from characters of that time and attached much importance to the revelation of personality; its landscape paintings were characterized by the prominence of blue and green colours and can capture the essence of unique image structure of 3-D space in the two-dimensional paintings. Besides, its line drawings preferred to adopt pandan-leaf line, willow-leaf line and leech-like line while its coloring techniques mainly represented the integrated application of red, blue, green, brown and white mineral pigments.
