Amber was used in decorative art in China consistently for more than three thousand years and can be traced back to the Sanxingdui site in Guanghan, Sichuan. It was regarded as precious objects as crystal, agate, turquoise, rhinoceros horn, shell, jade and precious metals, and began to come into use the imperial family, aristocrats and high officials as a token of position and wealth. It was mostly used for small decorative items, and sometimes as seals. Although it was recorded as having been used to make cups, plates and other items, these uses were rarely seen. Carving in the shape of round was the main form of decoration, with a small amount of flat and perforation works with simple recessed lines carved. Amber objects displayed distinctive appearances in the different periods in which they were produced.
