At the beginning of 2008, a piece of cattle scapula oracle bone was unearthed in the east of Luoyang. The front side of the oracle bone were carved with three sentences, fourteen characters in total (some characters were missing). The bone was laid horizontally and then carved vertically on the front of the bone near the joint. Two sentences were carved on the upper part, and one was carved on the lower left part. The first sentence was carved on the upper right of the three on the cattle scapula bone. It divined, “Is it necessary to hold a sacrifice rite?” The second sentence was carved on the left of the first and was in two lines with one to two characters missing. Compared with the third sentence, the missing characters was more likely numbers, implying that “Is it possible to buy a chariot with a certain number of shells?” The third sentence was carved on the lower left of the second, which reads, “Is it possible to buy a chariot with a hundred arrows?” To sum up, this is an oracle record about buying chariots.
