Originally, honorific arch resulted from the ancient neighborhood system, and later combined with the recognition system. It played vital roles of symbol, memory, decoration, recognition, and space division in Chinese traditional culture, which has deep historical and cultural connotations. A large number of ancient honorific arches have survived in many places, such as in Being, Shaanxi, Fujian, Jiangxi, Sichuan, and Hunan, where each honorific arch has its own bright regional culture characteristic. The northern honorific arches were of messiness and magnificence and decorated with colored drawings and glaze; the southern honorific arches were of lightness and elegance and made a feature of beautifully crafted works. Briefly, both of these honorific arches were either unsophisticated and dignified or resplendent and magnificent, which have become one unique human landscape of historical and cultural heritage in China.

China has a long history with memorial archway (gateway) that is well known for its architecture characteristics. Up to now, Shexian has more than eighty integral archways which are not separable from the culture heritage, economy and philosophy springhead of Shexian. The memorial archways in Shexian not only have special architecture styles and artful constructions, but also adopt many artistic techniques such as fancy stone carving, exquisite painting ploy, gentler plaque diction and wonderful calligraphy. Each archway has its settled unique construct meaning, which incarnates the ancients’ society concept, feudal tradition moral, and archaic folkway and folk-custom.
