“He” is one of the bronze ceremonial vessels and was very common during the periods of Shang Dynasty and the Warring States. It's especially popular in the late Shang Dynasty and the Western Zhou Dynasty but was gradually out of use in the late Spring and Autumn Period. The shapes of He are various. Mostly it is barrel-bellied with round mouth. Besides, it has a lid, with a spout in the front, a single ear in the back and three or four feet on the bottom. Between the lid and the single ear is a chain. The main function of He is to serve as wine vessles. Ancient people would pour the wine into the He from the bottle and add water to adjust the intensity of the wine when carrying out ancestral worship practices.
