plane table
An archaeological excavation was done on the No.3 Han Tomb at Mawangdui, Changsha in December 1973. Three silk maps, topographical map, garrison map and city map, were respectively discovered for the first time. Meanwhile, this important discovery attracted great attentions of map scholars and historical geographers at home and abroad, since the three maps were not only the earliest ones ever discovered in our country but also the true reflection of politics, military, surveying and mapping technology at that time. After careful research, quite a few scholars thought that the methods of right triangle calculation and scaling a map described in Arithmetic in Nine Sections and Zhoubi Mathematical Guide were the mathematical basis of ancient map surveying and mapping. Surveying and mapping tools included the direction-indicating instrument Sinan as well as instruments, like “gui”, “ju”(bevel gauge), etc. Through relevant records in historical documents and a discussion of the structure and method of use of “gui”, Wang Keling, a professor of Wuhan University, infers that it is no other than the ancient plane table.
