The Han Chang'an City Archaeological Team carried out salvage excavation of the ruined southwestern corner of the Han Chang'an City wall from June to August in 2002. The excavation clarified a series of doubts, including the construction form of the nearby southern and western city-walls, the area coverage of the roads on both sides of the western wall and the moat outside the southern wall, and the existence of a corner tower on the wall corner. Judged by the unearthed objects, the tower may be built simultaneously with the city-wall constructed by Emperor Huidi or somewhat later; its repairs and rebuilding were made on a large scale in the middle and late Western Han and Xin Mang periods; its collapse happened in the late Xin Mang or late Gengshi reign.
