作为一种古老的葬俗，屈肢葬反映了古代民族对灵魂、来生、亲属等问题的综合认识。它既随着本民族社会的发展与其它民族的影响而改变，同时又具有一定的守旧性和顽固性。在中原地区，同一墓地发现的不同葬俗，如屈肢葬、仰身葬、侧身葬和直肢葬并存，似乎表明贫富分化与私有观念出现后，氏族成员在氏族或家族中拥有不同的身份和社会地位。然而，在我国偏远的西南地区，虽然有时也有屈肢葬和以上几种葬式同时出现于同一墓穴中，但其意义并不完全与中原相同。

Fixed (or flexed) burial is among the oldest burial customs of ancient ethnic groups, which reflects people's cognition towards soul, afterlife and consanguinity. For one thing, it varies with the development of its own nation and the influences from other nations; for another, it also has a conservative instinct for rejecting all changes. In the Central Plains of China, different burial customs, such as fixed (or flexed) burial, extended burial, recumbent burial and unbending burial, etc., have been found coexisting in the same tomb, which indicates that members of the gens had different social status after the polarization between the rich and the poor and the private ownership mentality appeared. However, this may be not true of the remote areas in Southwest China. The tomb culture there is not exactly in accordance with that of the Central Plains region though occasionally fixed (or flexed) burial coexisted with other forms of burial in the same tomb.
