The Yinhe River petroglyphs found in 1992 are distributed from Gushanzi Town of Songshan District in Inner Mongolia in the west to the northern bank of Yinhe which is about 40 km away from Hongshan of Chifeng in the east. The Yinhe petroglyphs fall into three categories: human figures, animals and signs. A preliminary study suggests that the petroglyphs must go back to the time from the Xinglongwa culture to the period of the Liao Dynasty. The early petroglyphs must be closely related to witchcraft or religion and may represent the transition from shamanism or polytheism to the early ritual system.
