湖南临澧九里一带，地处湘西北，与湖北荆沙相距不远，是湖南地区目前发现规模最大、分布最为密集的一处楚墓群。1980年6月至10月发掘的临澧九里一号墓，规模宏大。该墓早年被盗掘，但墓室内的葬具木椁，保存基本完好，葬具为二椁三棺。其葬具结构与湖南中部的楚墓有所不同，而与湖北江陵雨台山、天星观楚墓极为相似，特别是弧形悬底内棺，在湖南楚墓中少见。随葬器物仅残存有大量的漆木器、少量的玉器和其他器物，出土时大都残损，而在大量漆木器中，有不少乐器，如木瑟就达6件之多。从该墓的墓葬形制、出土随葬品分析，该墓年代为战国中期。从墓室的规模和葬具以及丰富的随葬器物分析，墓主人地位应与湖北天星观墓主人地位相等，可能为一封君墓葬。

The Jiuli District of Linli County is located in the northwestern region of Hunan Province, adjoining Jingzhou and Shashi of Hubei Province. It has yielded the largest and most densely-scattered Chu tombs discovered in the Hunan region so far. Tomb 1, excavated from June to October in 1980, shows a massive structure. This tomb has suffered from looting in its early years, but the burial objects are more or less intact. The tomb houses two outer coffins and three inner coffins. The structure of the coffins is quite different from that found in other Chu tombs in central Hunan, but rather similar to that found in Chu tombs at Yutaishan and Tianxingguan of Jiangling County, Hubei Province. The curved raised bottom of the inner coffin is rarely seen in Chu tombs in Hunan. Only a large number of lacquer objects and some jade and other objects are found in the tomb, but most of these have been damaged. Among the lacquer objects, there are many musical instruments. For instance, the number of wooden psaltery already reaches as many as six pieces. Judging by the form of the tomb and the unearthed burial objects, this tomb dates back to the mid-Warring States Period. Based on the analysis of the size and the rich burial objects, the tomb occupant should be of the same social rank as that of Tianxingguan Tomb in Hubei Province, who may be a vassal.
