Experts analyzed the compositions, structures and firing temperatures of painted pottery samples from a tomb of the Han dynasty excavated from Xiangshan, Qingzhou and another tomb of the Warring States Period excavated from Yiyuan, Zibo with technological means. It was found for the first time that powdered talc was applied as the understratum on cinnabar painted pottery. In the second tomb, potteries were found to be decorated with layers of tin, which was also the first case in this style in the North China. The body materials of figurines and wares from the first tomb were similar, but their sintered temperatures were noticeably different as the temperatures for the figurines were higher than those of the wares.
