The fan has a long history in our country. According to textual research, its shape already existed in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and became popular by the Han Dynasty. In terms of the shape, the fan can be roughly divided into two main categories: handle fan and folding fan. With a handle under its fixed covering of the fan, the handle fan was easy to carry in handy. Besides, according to making materials the handle fan can be further classified into bamboo fans, feather fans, cattail leaf fans, and “Wan Shan” which was made of plain silk, leno and damask silk. As to the folding fan, its ancient name was “Zhedie Shan” (foldable fan). As several bamboo or wood battens fold up and a nail pins through the folded side, the framework of the folding fan was flexible, and people can close or open it freely after silk paper was pasted on it.
