In 1980, an Eastern Han dynasty pottery model of a vessel was unearthed in Deqing, Guangdong Province and attracted wide attention from archeologists. A lot of researches have been done on its type and technical characteristics. The complete model was published in A Collection of Antiquities from Silk Road on South China Sea in 1991, making it possible to conduct a comprehensive and detailed study on its features and technical details. The model's superstructure was in a reasonable, well-proportioned and beautifully designed three-island type. The palace-style bridge design reflected its function and social status. The rudder with shaft demonstrated the fashion of large scale ships and high maneuverability in shipping industry. The deck, the log of shipboard, the arc-shaped and rounded bottom structure illustrated structural strength and rapidity of the vessel. Its superstructure, appurtenances and main hull construction indicated that flexibility, stability, anti-sinking, speed and strength of vessels in the south of the Five Ridges during the Eastern Han Dynasty were greatly enhanced. It will advance researchers'understanding about shipbuilding level at that time in that region.
