Zhi (a slotted jade fitting attached to sword-scabbard)

When the ancients carried a sword, they usually threaded a long thin belt through the Zhi (a slotted jade fitting attached to sword-scabbard) and tied it to the waist. From many unearthed culture relics, such as wall paintings in Tomb No.1 of Han Dynasty, Wangdu County, Hebei province in 1952; wall paintings in Han Dynasty Tomb, Xindianzi Town, Helingeer County, Inner Mongolia in 1972; stone relief in Han Dynasty Tomb, Beizhai Village, Yinan County, Shandong province in 1954; silk painting about dragon-training in Chu Dynasty Tomb, Changsha province in 1973, etc., it can be seen that these figures tied similarly a long sword to the waist, but how to tie the knot was not clear yet. However, from the bronze tomb figures that drove the bronze chariots and horses with their swords, which was excavated from Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, we can clearly find that a belt was threaded through the Zhi and then tied to the waist.
