Five-Dragon Pavilion (Wu Long Ting)

Five-dragon Pavilion is located in the west of the north side of Beihai in Beijing, which was built in the 30th year of Wanli (1602 A.D.) in Ming dynasty and was repaired repeatedly in Qing dynasty. It was rebuilt on the site of the Taisu Palace in Ming dynasty, which was remodelled by Emperor Shunzhi in the 8th year of his reign (1651 A.D.) and was renamed as Five Pavilions. Five-dragon Pavilion stretches over the water, and consists of five pavilions which are all square and well-proportioned. Among the pavilions, the bridges and white marble railings join together in the shape of S that looks like a huge dragon and that is why it is also called Dragon Pavilion. The middle pavilion, also known as Longze Pavilion, is the biggest one among the five pavilions and serves as a break residence for emperors in Qing dynasty. At that time, Longze Pavilion was built specially for emperors and empresses to angle for fish, enjoy the glorious full moon and watch fireworks while the other four pavilions were places where the civil and military officials accompany emperors to fishing.
