The tooth-shaped jade ornament in the shape of sweeping curve, i.e., with one end wider, the other end tapering, is a kind of jade ware which had appeared in Eastern China and Yangtze valley in the late Neolithic Period. The excavations of tooth-shaped jade ornaments are abundant and most of them are made of jade, whose models and patterns varies with the times and regions between Shang Dynasty and Han Dynasty. Judging from the literature, tooth-shaped jade ornaments are corresponded to the so-called "Xi" (a short pointed instrument) and "Chongya" (a jade tooth-shaped pendant), both of which are believed to be the symbols of ritual norms as a gentleman.

In 1976, the builders excavated a batch of cultural relics in front of Yangzhu Temple in Zhifu Island, Yantai when they were digging water pipes. Eight pieces of gray jade wares were unearthed from the sacrificial pit in Qin Dynasty one meter under the ground. The gray jade wares were divided into two groups: each group consisted of one Gui (an elongated pointed tablet of jade held in the hands by ancient rulers on ceremonial occasions), one Bi (a round flat piece of jade with a hole in its center) and two knot-openers. As for the two knot-openers, one of them was 12 cm long, 1. 66 cm wide and 0. 5 cm thick; the other one was 11 cm long, 1. 52 cm wide and 0. 5 cm thick. Both of them were simply decorated without any pattern on them and had a gloss of glass on the surface; their sizes and shapes were slightly different.
