In the Garden of Palace of Peace and Longevity built by Emperor Qianlong in Qing dynasty, there is the Gate of Lasting Happiness, in the west front of which stands a building called Xi Shang Ting (Pavilion of the Ceremony for Purification) that is composed of one pavilion roof and three humpbacked rafters. Among the construction designs, the most interesting part is how the river winds its way to the aperture of bridge. Xi Shang Ting was established between the 37th year (1722 A.D.) and the 41st year (1726 A.D.) of Qianlong. In the north-and-south direction, the Garden of Palace of Peace and Longevity is long and wide while its east-and-west breadth is narrow, therefore, necessary and special designs in order to maximize the architecture space are indispensable when it comes to the establishment of this pavilion in the western corner of the Gate of Lasting Happiness.
