winged deer design
Decoration patterns of gold and silver wares in Tang dynasty were mainly rare birds and auspicious beasts, and several basic plant designs revolving around Neolamarckia cadamba, Po-phase flowers, shoot-bending flowers and winding branch flowers. In addition, they also assimilated a good deal of exotic patterns, among which mainly included standing bird patterns, wing stripes, Lianzhu patterns and fish patterns. Generally speaking, animal patterns on the Sassanian utensils were with two additional wings, around which there were patterns of wheat ears, i.e., badge style patterns which were particularly common in Sassanian silverwares. Winged deer designs on the lids of “silver plate with winged lion and pomegranate patterns” and “silver plate with phoenix and winged deer designs” which were unearthed from Hejia Village, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, obviously belonged to the badge style patterns.
