winged mythological creature
There were large-sized stone-sculptured animals among the archaeological remains of Eastern Han period known so far in the Sichuan reign. Most of them were recorded in front of tombs, and some of them occurred at city-gates. These sculptures feature multiple double-wings and can be assigned to the type of winged mythological creature. Their emergence must have been closely related to Sino-foreign cultural exchange in the Eastern Han period. Meanwhile, these works were frequently meaningful for researching into the origin and spreading route of stone sculptures in the Southern Dynasties. The localities of their provenance and distribution indicate that the Eastern Han stone animals discovered in Sichuan has provided new evidence for studies on the “Southern Silk Road”.
winged animal
In the tomb murals and pictorial stones, there was a type of motif showing a winged tiger biting a human being or an animal. The winged animals were art images introduced into China from the broad-sensed West. However, the issue that whether the images of lions or tigers biting and swallowing human beings or animals which were popular in the West and Eurasian Steppe had exerted influences on the emergence of this type of motif or not still needs to be studied further. The emergence of this type of motifs in Han tombs was the development of aboriginal cultures and beliefs and the extension of the Nuo ceremony of funeral rites. The goals of Nuo ceremony were to get rid of the evil beings that harmed the body and soul of the dead and to escort the dead ascending to the heaven.
