In the autumn of 1973, Anyang crew of the Institute of Archaeology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences excavated in the area of Xiaotunnandi and found eight pieces of oracle shells that were piled neatly together with some pottery fragments. These eight pieces of oracle shells are from the plastrons of turtles. The backs of these shells have scorched cavities and seven of them are engraved with oracle inscriptions.
