In the 1970s when the oil resource in China was undergoing nationalization, a group of state-owned oil companies stepped onto the international arena. In addition, the rise of North Sea oil, as well as the broke-out of two oil crises, a series of oil companies in developed economies also emerged. During the 1980s and 1990s, however, the trend of privatization sweeping outward from Great Britain and forced several of the national oil companies into the private sector, greatly impaired their strength.
