The traditional competitive advantages of a firm mainly came from low costs caused by mass production and the differentiation mainly based on quality difference. In the new age, in order to adapt to the change of competition environment and conditions, lean production tries to further lower cost under the condition of mass production, and flexible specialization tries to pursue the differentiation of products under the condition of middle and small scaled production. Mass customization is aimed at the mass production of customized products, and thereby realizes the combined advantages of the two kinds.
