With the prosperity of social economy and the development of cities and towns in Tat Lake valley during the Song Dynasty, to some extent there appeared the phenomenon of rural urbanization. The cities thrived unprecedentedly, which initiated the development of rural commodity economy and the urbanization of suburbs. Many market towns which showed the characteristic of urbanization gradually sprang up in rural areas. The rural market developed rapidly. Up to the Southern Song Dynasty, the rate of rural urbanization in Tat Lake valley had amounted to almost 10 percent.
